in Texas at least, the police will require the operator of the impound lot to release your personal property to you as long as it is not being used as evidence. Just go to the police department that ordered the vehicle to be impounded with a list of your personal property, and the police will take care of it for you. Do not know what the rules are where you live. also, there are rules about how much tow companies can charge, depending on whether it is a voluntary tow, a police ordered tow, or an accident tow. these are different depending on what county or city you are in when the tow occurs.
