An infant car seat travel question please?

I'd buy the extra seat based on what I saw last time I flew- while they were boarding my flight I was watching them load the car seats on the plane next to me, and they were not in the least bit gentle! It was to the point where the way they were being tossed around could have easily cracked them, rendering the car seat ineffective in the event of a car accident
